Character name: Anders
Fandom: Dragon Age (Awakening and 2)
Timeline: At the end of act 2
Age: around 30
~*Magical*~ abilities and strengths: Anders is a very talented healer. He can restore health, and even revive fallen allies in battle; and he even has abilities that cause those around him to regenerate faster. This is a temporary effect that also stops him from using any offensive spells while it is active. He can also produce a barrier to increase damage resistance.

His offensive spells focus on fire and ice. The latter can slow enemies down, and even freeze them. Similar to his healing skills, he also has skills that boosts the attack of those fighting alongside him.Other abilities include using telekinetic force to knock enemies over or keep them from moving forward; or to crush them beneath a "prison" of the same. He is also capable of temporarily paralyzing enemies.

Since being made Grey Warden he also has the ability to sense Dark Spawn - the mindless monsters of the Dragon Age world - and will know when an Arch-Demon is gathering power. He also gets the bonus of nightmares.

He is only capable of using so many abilities in a row before needing to rest or consume a lyrium potion. A mage draws their power from the Fade, which is where human and mages go where they sleep. It is also where spirits and demons live. If a mage uses too much magic it'll sap their own life force, and might kill them. The lyrium helps them connect to the Fade for extra power. Even when his mana is depleted, though, Anders does have a basic attack he can use at any time, which is also ranged. He essentially shoots out a burst of magic from his staff, but it has no other effect than dealing damage, and isn't particularly powerful. He also has a fairly weak constitution.
How would they use their abilities?: Healing, mostly. To defend himself when he's attacked, of course. If he finds himself a new Cause, he might use it more aggressively as well, but that is as of yet unknown.
Appearance: Anders isn't overly muscular, but he's still strongly built for a mage. He is used to travelling and fighting - not to mention running for his life - and it shows on his body. He's fairly tall, with strawberry blond hair tied back in a pony tail, and a few strands falling loose. He prefers to have a bit of a stubble as well. And even though it makes him an easy target, he's always wearing mages' robes, showing the world what he is (and giving bonuses to his magic, of course). He also carries his giant staff with him everywhere.

Background/Personality: Anders grew up in the Anderfels, where he lived on a farm with his parents. Already at a young age, though, Anders started displaying magical abilities; and when he accidentally set a barn on fire, his father grew afraid of him. When he was 12, the templars came to bring him to the circle, where all mages are kept. They handcuffed him as they took him away, and the only possession he was allowed to keep was a pillow. He knew then he'd most likely never see his family again.

Anders grew to resent the circle, and because of it despises feeling trapped. He tried to escape from the circle at least seven times. The first time was when he and the other mages were brought outside for exercise. Anders ran for the lake surrounding the Circle Tower and quickly swam across it. The templars, whose job it is to control mages, are always clad in heavy armor, and couldn't follow. They caught him again week later, but Anders never gave up on his quest for freedom, not even after he was put in isolation for a year; during which time his only friend was a cat. He hates the Circle and what it stands for too much to ever settle down there, even at the risk of being executed or made tranquil (have all his dreams and emotions severed, leaving someone an empty but very cooperative shell). In fact, the last time he escaped nearly resulted in his execution. It was near Vigil's Keep, one of the Grey Wardens' fortresses (protecters of the land, essentially). While the templars were bringing him in, Dark Spawn attacked, and all the templars died in the resulting battle. It's unclear whether Anders killed any of them, but he is found surrounded by their corpses by none other than the Hero of Ferelden. She had successfully stopped the blight - Dark Spawn are united by an Arch Demon and come to the surface to kill everything - and was clearing out a few stray Dark Spawn. Anders offered to help. After the Keep was successfully retaken, though, templars reappeared to arrest him again, saying he was to face execution this time. However, the Hero of Ferelden decided to make him a Grey Warden instead, something no one has the right to refuse. To become one, he drank the blood of a Dark Spawn, infecting himself with the "taint". He can now sense Dark Spawn, and will about Arch-Demons once they start to awaken. It will also kill him eventually.

His time with the Grey Wardens affected him greatly. He enjoyed travelling with the Hero of Ferelden. Anders is loyal when he decides someone deserves it, and when Vigil's Keep was attacked again later, Anders gave it his all to protect it. He might have continued working for the Grey Warden, if it wasn't for Ser Pounce-a-lot, a cat given to him by the Hero of Ferelden. After she had left, other Wardens felt the cat was making him weak, and took it away. Anders was starting to feel trapped again, and so ran away from the Grey Wardens as well.

While travelling with the Hero of Ferelden, during his time as a Grey Warden, Anders also met the Spirit of Justice, the embodiment of this human virtue, brought into their world from the Fade - the world of dreams and spirits. While Anders can be incredibly loyal to those he cares about - explaining why he fought so hard to protect Vigil's Keep - he has never been interested in fighting for the sake of all mages. He might hate the Circle, but as mentioned it's risky enough just trying to save himself. Justice kept questioning him on this, though, asking why he never did anything for his fellow mages, and this slowly started to affect the way Anders saw the world. So when he met Justice again later, he agreed to let the spirit possess him, so that they could work together.

The two, unfortunately, had a negative affect on each other once joined. Anders is now more determined than ever to fight for all mages, but his anger at the current situation warped Justice into a spirit of vengeance instead. Anders realised this could potentially make him into a threat, but their common cause was too important for him to regret his decision. It did affect him, though; while previously Anders had been the type to make jokes in nearly every situation, approaching everything with sarcasm, after this he grew more pessimistic, more withdrawn. He'll still make jokes, but they're more rare, as he knows the situation he's in won't end well - and this time it's not just him it'll go badly for. But if he can help people in the process, it's a necessary sacrifice, is it not?

The cause has now turned into a Cause as well, and Anders talks about nothing else most of the time. He's even writing a manifesto, leaving copies upon copies of it around, which is impressive for a world where the printer most likely hasn't been invented yet. And while he'll stubbornly insist that being possessed by a spirit of Justice is not the same as being possessed by a demon, when he upens up to the people he trusts, he tends to warn them away from him. He's willing to go far for what he believes in, but he's not willing to drag down the people he cares about as well.

Anders travelled to Kirkwall after hearing that his friend and former lover had been brough to the Circle there. The Circle in Kirkwall is a lot stricter than the one in Ferelden, which Anders originally belonged to. In this city mages are made tranquil for the slightest thing, and Anders is determined to save his friend before this happens. Upon arriving he opens up a clinic in Dark Town - the slums in the city - healing refugees fleeing the blight, as well as the other poor people of the city. And he'll fight to protect his clinic, even knowing he'd risk his own life doing so. His own life means less now that he has Justice with him, though he's still wary of drawing the attention of templars.

When Hawke comes to the clinic, Anders sees a chance. He has managed to successfully contact his friend Karl, but isn't sure whether he'll be able to rescue him alone. After all, templars might show up, and they are trained to fight mages. Hawke is looking for a map of the Deep Roads - tunnels below ground, dug by dwarves - and in return for that, Anders recruits his help. However, whe they go to meet Karl, they find he's already tranquil. Anders anger at this makes Justice take over, attacking the templars who were waiting there. Karl is temporary brought to his senses, and asks Anders to kill him, because living like that, with no dreams at all, is pure torture. Reluctantly, Anders grants his wish.

Anders started travelling with Hawke after this, though Hawke never had much time for Anders' beliefs, and tells him off when he goes too far. WAt one point Justice's anger resulted in Anders nearly killing an innocent mage. He would have, if Hawke hadn't been there to stop him. And being constantly told off by someone he respects makes him hesitate - though not enough to back down. It confuses him, how much he respects someone who is everything that he hates, but he is inexplicably drawn to him regardless.

Anders is becoming more and more determined to do something for all mages. He is writing manifestoes in an effort to convince Hawke to see his point of view, and is starting to feel like something major might be needed. A lot of this is due to Justice as well, as a spirit of Vengeance is hardly known for its patience. Justice's mind is powerful, and is affecting Anders' more and more, though he tries his hardest to fight back. He's starting to realise now that it was a bad idea, but his arguments with Hawke is causing him to be more single-minded than ever. It's a confusing and frustrating situation, and so he prefers to focus all his energy into helping Hawke for now. Until, that is, he is able to come up with a proper plan of action.

To summarise: Anders is sarcastic, but far less so than he used to be. He doubts himself, which only makes him more determined to aid his Cause. And he has a spirit which is strongly affecting his mind and making it hard, in some cases, to think clearly. In particularly emotional situations, the spirit takes over entirely.

Anders is used to being on his own in any situation. He says that in the circle, love could only ever be a game, as honestly caring about someone to that extent only gave the templars more power. He has a hard time letting anyone in due to this. Even so, he's grown attached to Hawke, someone who he should hate more than anything, and tends to listen to his opinions at the very least. He's also forgetting more and more how to relax and have fun, thanks to Justice's influence.

Anders tries flirting with Hawke a few times, but berates himself for it, and feels it's for the best thatthe interest is not returned. Justice doesn't approve in either case, and Anders would prefer not to drag Hawke down with him. He knows the situation with Justice will turn bad in the end, as most things do, and he's used to being on his own. Continuing that way is most likely easier. Regardless of this, though, he'll keep travelling with Hawke for now, as long as Hawke needs him to.

Have you read up on how the game works?: The Flaming Ferret goes thieving in the night and uses his loot to invest in stocks which he sells on to gullible refugees through his position at the Lightning Post.

3rd person sample: Anders had spent a few days exploring the ship. He felt better if he knew where all the hiding places were, despite having been reassured that there were no Templars around. He was too used to being a fugitive, an apostate, and the role was difficult to give up. And there was also the fact that he didn't trust this place, wherever it was. They were meant to just accept that their world was gone, and that this place was somehow their best option?

After spending some time wandering this bizarre place, he'd discovered a few upsides to it, as well. He might never get used to all the metal, but it seemed there was more to it than that: the pool, the gardens, and the smell as he passed the coffee shops. The actual drink tasted foul, but the smell still managed to be tempting.

A now, of course, this. Anders walked down aisle upon aisle in the giant library. There were books in every language imaginable, and from countries and planets he found it hard to imagine. So it wasn't too far-fetched to believe it possible, was it?

He'd wandered for at least twenty minutes before even finding a language he recognised, but after that it got easier. Libraries everywhere were sorted the same way, it seemed, and he'd spent a lot of time in the Circle library while he was there. And now: A book on Andraste, on the history of the Ferelden Circle, and even a lineage on Kirkwall nobles. And there, hidden between a book of elven myths and several crafting recipes: His manifesto, bound and printed in easily readable letters.

Although, he noted, flipping through the pages, it would have been nice if they'd left out Isabela's scribbles in the margins.
